Frequently asked questions

What does Netlane do?

Netlane shows the country of your public IP address as a flag in the macOS menu bar or Windows system tray. Click it for your IP, ISP, connection type, DNS servers, timezone and a speed test. It can also show live network speed and a desktop widget.

Which services does Netlane contact?

To find your public IP and its location, Netlane asks ipwho.is, falling back to ipapi.co if it's unavailable. Speed tests run against Cloudflare (speed.cloudflare.com). On Windows, flag images come from flagcdn.com. Netlane has no account and no servers of its own, and your settings stay on your computer.

How often does Netlane refresh?

Every 5 minutes, and a few seconds after any network change such as switching Wi-Fi or turning a VPN on or off. You can also refresh manually. The speed test runs only when you click “Run test”.

Can Netlane tell if my VPN is on?

Netlane shows a “VPN likely” badge when it sees an active tunnel interface, and the flag shows the country your traffic appears to come from, so you can check your VPN at a glance.

Why does my computer warn me when I first open Netlane?

Netlane isn't yet signed with an Apple Developer ID or a Windows code-signing certificate, so macOS Gatekeeper and Windows SmartScreen ask you to confirm. On Mac, right-click the app and choose Open. On Windows, click More info → Run anyway.

How do I add the widget?

On macOS, right-click the desktop, choose Edit Widgets and search for “Netlane”. On Windows, open Netlane's Settings and turn on “Show desktop widget”.
